Choosing the perfect deck material

While cost is often the most influential factor involved in making a decking material selection, there are other factors that the homeowner should consider such as workability, durability, insect resistance. Here some options to explore to make an informed choice.

When planning an outdoor deck, one of the decisions you face is which material to use for the decking. While most decks use pressure-treated wood lumber for the under structure (the posts, beams, joists, etc.), the decking can be a completely different material. The three most commonly used materials for decking are wood, wood-composite (a mixture of wood fibers and plastic), or an all-plastic decking made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Each year we see an increase in customers opting for low maintenance decking materials for their outdoor living space. This trend sees more and more people opting for wood-composite and pvc decking products over traditional building materials like Western Red Cedar and Pressure Treated Pine, which often require annual maintenance such as cleaning, sanding and refinishing.
